Tobit

Chapter 10

1

Now Tobit, his father, was counting every day. And when the days of the journey were completed, and they had not come,

2

he said, "Is he detained? Or has Gabael died, and no one will give him the money?"

3

And he was very grieved.

4

Then his wife said to him, "The boy has perished, and he is no longer among the living." And she began to weep and mourn for her son, and said,

5

"I regret, my son, that I let you go, you who are the light of my eyes."

6

But Tobit said to her, "Be quiet, and do not worry; he is safe."

7

But she said to him, "Be quiet, and do not try to deceive me; my son has perished." And she went out every day into the road by which they had left, and she watched all day and night, and ate no food. And when the sun had set, she went away sorrowful and wept, and would not be comforted.

8

At length, after the fourteen days of the wedding feast were over, Raguel swore to him that he should not leave until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were completed,

9

and that then he should take half of Raguel's possessions and go in health to his father, and the rest, he said, "When I and my wife die, they will be yours." So Tobias swore to him that he would stay until the wedding feast was completed.

10

Then he said to his son-in-law, "Remain in health. I will send your wife's father and mother to you. May I see your children before I die."

11

He also said to his daughter, "Honor your father and mother-in-law; they are now your parents. Let me hear a good report about you." Then he kissed her.

12

Edna also said to Tobias, "May the holy angel of the Lord accompany you both, and bring you in health. May your children be well before you, and may you live long."

13

Then she said to her daughter, "Go in peace to your father-in-law, and may your eyes see my children before I die."
