Tobit

Chapter 6

1

And as they went on their journey, they arrived in the evening at the river Tigris, and they lodged there.

2

And when the young man went down to wash himself, a fish leaped out of the river and tried to devour him.

3

Then the angel said to him, "Catch the fish." So the young man caught the fish and threw it onto the land.

4

Then the angel said to him, "Cut open the fish, and take the heart, the liver, and the gall, and put them aside safely."

5

So the young man did as the angel commanded him; and they roasted and ate the fish. Then they both went on their way until they came near to Ecbatana.

6

Then the young man said to the angel, "Brother Azarias, what is the liver, the heart, and the gall of the fish good for?"

7

He said to him, "As for the heart and the liver, if a demon or an evil spirit oppresses anyone, you must make smoke from them in the presence of the man or the woman, and he will no longer be oppressed.

8

And as for the gall, it is good to anoint a man's eyes in which there is a white film, and they will be healed."

9

When he had entered Media and already approached Ecbatana,

10

Raphael said to the young man, "Brother Tobias." He said, "Here I am." Then Raphael said to him, "We must stay this night in the house of Raguel. He is your relative, and he has a daughter named Sarah.

11

I will speak to him about her, so that she may be given to you as a wife.

12

For the right to have her belongs to you, before all other men who may wish to marry her. She is a sensible, courageous, and very beautiful woman, and her father is a good man." And he said, "She should be given to you as a wife.

13

Now, therefore, listen to me, brother; I will speak to her father about her tonight, so that she may be betrothed to you. And when we return from Rages, we will celebrate her marriage."

14

Then Tobias answered and said, "I have heard that she has been given to seven men, and they all died in the bridal chamber. But now I am the only son of my father, and I am afraid that if I go in to her, I will die as the others did, because a demon loves her and does not harm her, but he kills anyone who wishes to come near her. So I am afraid that I will die and bring the lives of my father and my mother to the grave because of me, and they have no other son to bury them."

15

Then the angel said to him, "Do you not remember the instructions which your father gave you, that you should take a wife from among your own kindred? Now, therefore, listen to me, brother, and do not think about this demon, but take her.

16

For this night she is given to you as a wife.

17

And when you go into the bridal chamber, take the ashes of incense, and put upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish, and make a smoke with it.

18

Then the demon will smell it, and flee away, and never return to her again.

19

But when you come near to her, both of you, first rise up and pray to the Lord of heaven and earth, that he would have mercy upon you and save you. Do not be afraid, for she was given to you from the beginning. You will save her, and she will go with you. And I suppose that you will have children by her." When Tobias heard these things, he loved her, and his heart was strongly drawn to her.
