Tobit

Chapter 8

1

When they had finished eating and drinking, they wanted to go to sleep; so they brought the young man into the room where Sarah was.

2

But Tobias remembered the words of Raphael, and he took the ashes of the incense, and put the heart and the liver of the fish on them, and made a smoke.

3

Then the demon, smelling the odor, fled into the upper parts of Egypt; and the angel bound him there.

4

When they were both shut in together, Tobias rose from the bed, and said, "Sister, arise, and let us pray that the Lord would have mercy on us."

5

Then Tobias began to say, "Blessed are you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name forever. Let the heavens and all your creatures bless you.

6

You made Adam, and gave him Eve his wife as a helper and support. From them came the seed of mankind. You said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself.'

7

And now, O Lord, I do not take this sister of mine because of lust, but in truth. Command that I may find mercy and may grow old together with her."

8

She said with him, "Amen."

9

Then they both slept through the night. And Raguel rose up and went and dug a grave,

10

saying, "I am afraid that he also may have died."

11

When Raguel came into his house,

12

he said to his wife Edna, "Send one of the maidservants, and let her see whether he is alive. But if he is dead, let us bury him, and no one will know about it."

13

So the maidservant opened the door, and went in, and found them both asleep,

14

and she came out and told them that he was alive.

15

Then Raguel blessed God, saying, "Blessed are you, O God, with all pure and holy blessing. Let your saints and all your creatures bless you; let all your angels and your chosen people bless you forever.

16

Blessed are you, because you have made me glad. It has not happened to me as I suspected; but you have dealt with us according to your great mercy.

17

Blessed are you, because you had compassion on two only children. Show them mercy, O Lord, and perfect their lives in health, happiness, and mercy."

18

Then he commanded his servants to fill the grave.

19

He made the wedding feast for them for fourteen days,

20

and before the days of the wedding feast were over, Raguel swore to him that he would not leave until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were completed,

21

and that then he would take half of Raguel's possessions and go in health to his father; and the rest, he said, "When I and my wife die, they will be yours." So Tobias swore to him that he would stay.
