This book is part of the canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, but is not recognized by Protestant, Catholic, or non-Ethiopian Eastern Orthodox traditions. It is one of the three books of Meqabyan (sometimes called the 'Ethiopian Maccabees'), which are distinct from the Maccabees books found in the Septuagint and Vulgate. Although it shares the name, it has no direct relation to the Jewish Maccabean revolt. The text presents parallels with Deuteronomistic themes: sin, punishment, repentance, and restoration, along with a strong emphasis on the resurrection of the dead.

II Meqabyan

Chapter 3

1

and the prophet came from Riemat and told him - to Riemat that are Mo`ab part are near to Sorya.

Him dug a pit and entered up til him neck and wept firm tears - and him entered repentance because him sin that him worked before JAH.

and JAH told the prophet thus: - Return from Yihuda country Riemat toward the Mo`ab official Meqabees Him told him. Tell him - "JAH told thee thus" - Tell him - "Him told thee - I-man JAH Who am thy Creator sent thee by I Accord that thou might destroy I country - lest thou say - 'Mi destroyed the honoured country 'Iyerusaliem by mi Power firmness and mi army abundance' - yet it aren't thou who did this thing.

to she have saddened I by all she greed and she perfidy and she lustfulness.

and I-man neglected and cast she by thy hand - and now JAH forgave thee thy sin because thy childran whom thou birthed ~ it aren't because thou who firmed up thy collar of reasonin and say 'Mi incircled the country 'Iyerusaliem by mi authority firmness.'

As persons who doubt aren't disciplined to enter repentance - don't be a doubter - and now enter repentance bein disciplined in thy complete reasonin."

However persons are admired who enter repentance in them complete reasonins and who don't again return toward thirst and sin by all that entered toward repentance because them sin.

Persons are admired who return toward them Creator JAH bein disciplined in mournin and sadness - in bowin and many pleas. Persons are admired who are disciplined and enter repentance - to Him have told them - You are I moneys who entered repentance after you misled persons who entered repentance.

Him told arrogant Meqabees on the time him returned toward Him in repentance after him misled - I-man forgive thee thy sin because thy fright and thy alarm; to I-man am JAH thy Creator Who bring hardship on childran by a father sin up til seven generations if the child work the sin that the father worked - and Who do Charity up til ten thousand generations to persons who love I and keep I LAW.

and now I-man will firm up I Oath with thee because these thy childran whom thou birthed - and JAH Who rule all and Who honoured 'Isra'iel said - I-man will accept the repentance thou made because thy sin that thou worked.

At that time him proceeded from the pit and bowed to the prophet ~ him swore sayin - "As mi have saddened JAH - make mi what thou loved - yet make JAH do mi thus thus lest mi separate from thee-I ~ as we have no Law - mi didn't live firmed up in Him Command like unto mi fathers ~ thou know that we fathers taught we and that we worship idols.

to mi are a sinner who lived firmed up in mi sin - who firmed up in mi collar of reasonin firmness and mi reasonin arrogance whereby mi saddened JAH Command - but up til now mi hadn't heard JAH servants the prophets Word - and mi didn't live firmed up in Him LAW and Him Command that Him commanded mi."

Him told him sayin - "As there are none from your kindred precedin you who trusted him sin - mi knew that the prophet raceived repentance today."

"But now quit thy worshippin idols and return toward knowin JAH that thou might have true repentance" him told him ~ him fell and bowed at the prophet feet - and the prophet lifted up and commanded him all the goodly Work that are due him.

and him returned toward him house doin also like unto JAH commanded him.

16

and that Meqabees returned him body toward worshippin JAH - and him destroyed from him house the idols and also the sorcery - persons who worship idols and pessimists and magicians.

17

and mornin and evenin like unto them fathers do - him would examine the childran him captured and brought from 'Iyerusaliem in all JAH Commands and Him Order and Him LAW.

and from the childran him captured - him appointed knowin ones on him house.

and again from the infants him appointed knowin childran who keep levelled childran who were small - who enter toward the beddin that them might teach them JAH LAW that 'Isra'iel childran do ~ him would hear from captured 'Isra'iel childran the Order and the LAW and the Nine Laws - that Mo`ab persons order and them mosques that them make were vain.

Him destroyed them mosques - them idols and them sorcery - and the sacrifice and the grapes sacrificed to the idols mornin and evenin from the goat kids and fattened sheeps flocks.

and him destroyed him idols whom him worship and beg and believe in all him Work while him sacrificed sacrifice afternoon and at noon - and to all priests told him - and him idols to whom him do them accord.

As it would seem to him that them save him in all that them told - him wouldn't scorn all the thing them told him.

But that Meqabees quit them Work.

After him heard the Ra`ay thing - whom them call a prophet - him accomplished him Work in repentance ~ as 'Isra'iel childran would sadden Him at one time - and on the time Him chastised them in the tribulation - as them know and also cry toward JAH - all Him kindreds worked goodly Work more than 'Isra'iel childran in that season.

on the time Him heard that them were seized and abused by peoples hand who firm up tribulation on them and that them cried toward Him - Him thought of them fathers oath and at that time Him would forgive them because them fathers Yis'haq - 'Abriham - and Ya`iqob.

and on the time Him saved them - them would forget JAH Who saved them from tribulation - and them would return toward worshippin the idols.

27

and at that time Him would arouse on them peoples who firm up tribulation on them - and on the time them firmed up tribulation on them and saddened them - them would cry toward JAH ~ as Him love them because them were Him Authority Creation - at that time Him would be nice and forgive them.

and on the time Him kept them - them again returned toward sin that them might sadden Him by them hands Work that were firm and by worshippin idols in them councils.

But Him would arouse on them Mo`ab and 'Iloflee - Sorya - Midyam and Gibts persons; and on the time them enemies defeated them - them would cry and weep ~ on the time them firmed up on them and taxed them and ruled them - JAH would arouse princes to them that Him might save them on the time Him loved.
